Everything was going just fine when I was in my early twenties.. enjoying the ‘big city, bright lights’, my freedom of choice and my freedom of expression. I expressed myself primarily as a freelance graphic designer.
But under the current something was starting to turn.
Even though I had a creative career, I guess I was always something of an intellectual, a questioner. But it was only in my early twenties when I first remember being struck by the question: “What is the meaning of life?” And once I entertained this question, it was soon followed by a host others… Who are we, really? What is the purpose of life? What is the true nature of the universe? How does life really work? Why are we experiencing what each of us is experiencing? Why is the world the way it is, and how can we change it? How can we create and manifest more effectively? What is the key to happiness?
These questions steadily became more and more important for me, and I engaged in whatever reading, discussion, contemplation, or groups I thought would bring me closer to solid answers, closer to Truth.
This continued for seven years until I reached a point where these questions became far too pressing for me, and I found it impossible to go on designing for a living, with these questions looming around my head, still largely unanswered. I had to make it my full time focus!
I quickly made plans to finance a trip to India – which entailed selling off all my possessions at the time! (Consequent to my spiritual and philosophical investigations up to that stage, I felt India offered a very deep perspective of the big picture – also since Indian Philosophy spoke about Maya – the theory of illusions.)
Within a few months I arrived in India, and found myself traveling huge circle around the magical country, in search of the answers, and in search of an ideal institution to study and contemplate the truth of life. After traveling and exploring spiritual schools, I eventually lived in an ashram for three years. Here I engaged in intellectual inquiry and deep contemplation on the truth about life, in and through a structured investigation of the ancient Advaita Vedanta philosophy.
I’ve come to the wonderful discovery that WE ARE ALL ONE – not as a mere concept, but as a reality beyond our realm of concepts. Our true self, the innermost you and me, is intimately connected with the infinite consciousness that pervades all things and enables all experience. From it emerges this ’seeming reality’ of separation, individuality, limitation, insufficiency and need – in order that we may experience ourselves in a myriad of ways, and have the opportunity to create and re-create ourselves – and our world -continually in our highest ideas, our deepest desires, and greatest imaginings. In doing so, we take the process of life – and life itself – to the next level of expression in a wondrous, magnificent, ever-evolving reality. In the process, we get to create meaning and have fun along the way!
I’ve also come to see that the nature of our experience in all spheres of life – our inner worlds, our relationships, politics, economics, and religion – depends on our spiritual understanding. In other words our answers to the deepest spiritual questions, whether explored or neglected, whether consciously or sub-consciously addressed, and whether accurate or misguided, automatically play out in our lives and our world.
Belief colors experience. And some of the things we believe to be true about our world and ourselves are in fact erroneous ideas. They are cultural myths, or illusions. And we live with them everyday. If we see these as real, we create a life and a world which falls far from its optimum possibility. If we see them as the illusions they are, and use them for the purpose they were created, they help bring us back to our truth. It is so heartening to see such a vast array of healing and transformational modalities around today, yet I feel that becoming more aware of these illusions could seriously transform our lives and our world.
I’m also passionate about the internet and emerging technologies, and I’m exploring the role these could play in our transformation.
And I’m inspired to contribute to a more accurate understanding globally of ‘how it all works’, and to share this knowledge to help steer our world back to Peace, Equality, Abundance, Love and Joy. I have a dream…
