The Story of Stuff, a Message about Materialism

Having lived as a contemplative monk in India for a few years, and having returned to the world to explore and embrace the world of money and commerce, I take care to point out the difference between materialism and material engagement.[/caption]Material engagement is unavoidable, since we are also physical beings inhabiting in a physical world, and there are enlightened ways to engage in the world of “stuff” in the form of beautiful things, cars, houses, fine artwork etc, and in the world of work, business, and wealth creation. Expanding our Definition and Appreciation of Money

old coins photo

“Money”, like most English words can have many different definitions and interpretations. Indeed, English itself can be an ambiguous language at the best of times, in which meaning most often depends on context and even culture.

Money is no simple subject. It is a vast phenomenon, existing in many different forms and on many different levels, and has proliferated our culture and our minds, making it very difficult to even imagine a world without money. (more…)

On Awareness, Consciousness and Enlightenment

universe photoSince there is generally a lot of vagueness around the terms of awareness, consciousness and enlightenment, I wrote this post to bring more definition, distinction and clarity to these terms..

One could define without too much difficulty what a flower is, or even what a space shuttle is. These are objects of your awareness, as is any material object in our world. Even events – like rain or Christmas – are objects of your awareness, and are not too difficult to understand or describe. (more…)

You don’t have to serve God!

offering photoI generally steer away from using the word God, as it has become a tarnished and very misunderstood word. But today I find it necessary to use the word to discuss this topic.

Some people say that our purpose in life is to serve God. Indeed some religions teach this.

Some take this further and, seeing how impractical this is, say that the only way to serve God is to serve others. (more…)

Money Needs You!

Now here’s a perspective on money which you probably haven’t heard before, and which will help you relate to money differently, and influence your ability to attract more of it into your life: You might be used to thinking – either consciously or subconsciously – that you need money. Have you ever considered that it could also be true be that money needs you?!

Here’s what I mean by this. Firstly everything is energy. Every single thing in the manifested universe is energy. The sun is energy. The earth and everything on it are forms of energy. This means that you too are energy.  Your thoughts and emotions are forms of energy. Even our social constructs like the law, or friendship, or holidays embody a certain energy. So too with the thing we call money. (more…)

The Perfect Argument (Is the World Perfect or Not?)

perfect photoI’m sure you’ve heard the argument a hundred times before – your spiritually aware, new-age-leaning, gentle hippie friend says “Ah, but it’s all perfect!” And sooner than you can allow yourself to contemplate that, your other friend, a self-proclaimed pragmatist, an undying realist, shouts: “But how can you say that?! With all the war, and abuse, and violence, and murder, and poverty in the world, how dare you say it’s perfect?”

So is the world perfect, or not? (more…)

The Illusions we Live With

illusion photo

The notion that this world is some kind of illusory phenomenon is not a new idea. As far back as about 6000 years ago, the philosophers of India were talking about the theory of Maya, meaning illusion. And in modern times as more and more in the western world are awakening to ‘spirituality’ and self-development, the illusion theory is becoming more widespread.

Yet it is one of the most difficult areas of knowledge to delve into and understand. This is because all the knowledge in the world is based on the world. It is based on what we perceive through the senses and through scientific equipment which serves as an extension of the senses. Some knowledge is based on inference. (more…)

A Recipe for the Feast of Life

dancing photo

I found this piece of writing the other day, and decided to share it here. Something I wrote for a good friend’s wedding a few years ago – for the album of wedding wishes. Couldn’t help but bring some wisdom into it of course! I trust it will shed some light for you on the wondrous dance of life.. (more…)

You need Nothing!

What do you need right now? A cigarette?! Some coffee? A new car? Financial stability? How about perfect health? Maybe peace of mind? Or do you need love?

Whatever you think you need, take a moment to really think about it, and ask yourself whether these are actual needs, or are they perhaps desires and preferences. (more…)

Try Binaural Beats for More Effective Meditation

I mentioned binaural beats meditation a few times recently, and noticed that many people have still not heard of it. Hence this blogpost…

Can you imagine a world without recorded music? There certainly was a time in which this was a reality on our planet. Recorded music is just over a century old, and before this one could only listen to live music, either vocals or instrumentals or both. One had to enjoy it in the moment, as there was no way of recording it to ‘take away’! (more…)
